Hi, I am a translator-to-be, currently in my last year of university. I was wondering where professional translators and/or interpreters provide their services in today's world. Is it common to have an at-home office, is it common to use co-working spaces? Any comments or opinions are more than welcomed!

It may be useful to try to think about finding a job at a company or organisation before you start freelancing. If you come straight from university, it may be good to gain some experience in translating at, for example, a translation agency, or to specialise by working in a particular field you are interested in.

I believe translators without experience and without at least a few years of specialisation, even if they have the right diplomas, will find it very difficult to earn a decent income from translation.
Getting back to your question, I work in a dedicated office space at home and I like it - everything I need is in my office and at the end of the day I close the door so work does not leak into my non-work life. ▲ Collapse

It's best to start cheaply, and that means having a home office. I have some colleagues that use a co-working space, but it really depends on your own personality. Initially, much of your "work" will consist of doing marketing via e-mail or online sign-up forms, so you should be able to do that from anywhere.

Yes, I know that is better to start off in a translation agency or company. I was asking about the working place in particular.
