Monopoly Feb 21

This seems to be some bad grammar, but if I understand the question correctly: not at all. So I'm a bit surprised that about 50% of the respondents answered with "yes" at this point. How can an agency, a translator or a direct client have a monopoly on translation jobs ?

I don't know Feb 21

What does that even mean and how would that even happen?

Monopoly? Feb 21

No matter how many times I turn this around, I just can't understand this question (apparently asked by Proz staff). Do they care to explain what prompted it? Do they really think there's a monopoly on translation? How? Where?

Agencies Feb 21

I'm guessing they are asking whether the big agencies control the market?

Not in my pairs. But they do have significant power and have certainly pulled down prices for government work.

of or on Feb 21

Monopoly on or of?

The question is not fully clear, I agree with others, but I can see what it’s trying to ask.

Some colleagues used to provide data about “large agencies”. An agency having a $5k-10k monthly SEO budget could have some monopoly, in theory. However today I am seing more and more clients turning directly to translators.

As for translators, not sure how this monopoly would work.

Monopoly? Feb 21

If there were a monopoly, Proz.com as a translator platform would be obsolete by now and we'd all (probably only a few of us) be working for it...

That would be fun. I can imagine designing a special translators' version...

Agencies from India, China and increasing Egypt - and lousy rates Feb 21

If any, I notice the monopoly of peanuts paid jobs and that many agencies are based in India, China (1 in particular) and an increasing number in Egypt (some with headquarter there and offices in other countries).
Right now there are agency jobs from:
8 from India, 4 from China, 3 from Germany, 3 from France, 2 from Egypt, 1 from Italy, 1 from Czech Republic, 1 from Switzerland, 2 from the US, 1 from the Dominican Republic, 1 from Austria, 1 from Thailand, 1 in the Netherlands, 1 f

Monopoly in ASL Interpreting is regional Feb 21

There definitely is a regional monopoly for ASL interpreting especially with the credentialiing. USA has 1, ONLY 1, organization that offers a national credential and they use it to profit on requiring CEUs then offering the courses at a high cost and will penalize interpreters from complaints that came in 4, 5, even 10 yars ago!

How can an organization function knowing at any time they can steal someone's livelihood because a consumer is upset about something that happened 20 years
