Have done for some time. I can also work without them.

Yes, Feb 25, 2012

Always, even if it is a small document that does not really need to be translated in a CAT tool

Not "regular" - always Feb 25, 2012

I can't imagine working without Trados now.
If a customer asks me to translate from printed copy, I feel as if I am being forced into caveman mode. AND it takes that much longer!

Happy translating!

No Feb 25, 2012

Occasionally, yes, when there are plenty of repetitions in the text, when the text is part of a continuous project in order to ensure consistency or when a client asks me to use one. But certainly not regularly.

I used to rely heavily on Trados Feb 25, 2012

But it "broke down" and the error message didn't correspond to anything on SDL's website, so I started using Jive Fusion. Couldn't live without it now.

I translate all Word files with Wordfast. The biggest advantage is that I can check the translation againt the source text any time, without having to open another file.

Other than yes and no...? Feb 25, 2012

It is important to notice that the CAT tool universe is expanding and is no longer synonymous with translation-memory tools. Some tools are cloud-based, others incorporate project management features.

I recommend we read Jost Zetzsche's definitions of CAT tools and TENt tools (translation-environment tools) to update our knowledge.

Additionally, this poll is kinda feeble, akin to asking “Do you sit on a chair when you sit down to eat?”

More creativity and challenge, please.

As for “Do you sit on a chair when you sit down to eat?”, apparently 30+ percent do not (the number who indicate they do not use CAT on a regular basis). They must be at bar table type finger-food event.

I originated this poll because I was curious -- there are many questions about CAT tools on this web site, and I assume that most people here do use one, but I was curious to get more specific information. They're not always cheap, and they're not always required by clients or a

They're not always cheap, and they're not always required by clients or agencies. I certainly use one, and I expected to see a high number, but it's interesting to see just how high it is (or isn't).

Apart from TM software... Feb 26, 2012

I would now find it awkward to do without OCR software (I use Abbyy Fine Reader).

It has paid for itself simply in the word-counting time it has saved me when preparing quotes.

Always, even when it's not required.

You can't miss a sentence with a CAT, and the neat display of the source against the target is really comfty for the eye. Not to mention that working always with the same layout *does* speed a lot my job.

Finally, some CAT such as MemoQ allow me to run excellent QA on the files. E.g. MemoQ tells me when in the source there is a full stop at the end of the sentence and in the target not ('cause I forgot), or when in the source there i

Finally, some CAT such as MemoQ allow me to run excellent QA on the files. E.g. MemoQ tells me when in the source there is a full stop at the end of the sentence and in the target not ('cause I forgot), or when in the source there is a figure but in the target doesn't.
I wish Wordfast has this capability. I have been a little disappointed of Wordfast Pro QA, so far (it just checks the TAGs).

The only situation where I wouldn't spend time setting up a project in a CAT is when I am translating something under 200 words.
