It can be boring if it is particularly time-consuming and the subject is not exactly interesting
it may be exciting, if the subject is interesting,
time consuming? no, it is part of the job, but saying it is just part of the job seems "unfair", I mean, a nice part of a translation is learning, and I repeat, it depends on the subject.

Perhaps, "Challenging"
It's true, it is time consuming, but it's a necessary part of producing a quality product.
The only problem I see is that the longer it takes to find a term, the more possibility there is of becoming sidetracked because of al the other interesting subjects that may pop up as you're searching.

Almost always interesting.
Very satisfying (when you find just what you're looking for).
Frustrating (when you don't).
Defining it as exciting is a bit over the top, except in exceptional cases.

One thing the search for just the right term is definitely not: a waste of time - though time consuming. Even when I get sidetracked (which I try not to ), it's a learning experience. After all, there is no such thing as "learning too much". ... Personally I kind of like the search even if it can be frustrating, time consuming and stressful when faced to a tight deadline...

If I come up with a very beautiful equivalent, or, at least reach a total understanding of the term, it will seem very exciting and interesting. Still it depends on the term itself, whether its complexity has worthed looking up very hard or not!
And it usually happens that I find the term or create a nice equivalent for it, hence mostly being exciting!

It always takes too much time, but it is definitely part of the job.
I may get diverted into all sorts of side-alleys as I surf around the Net.
I have even been known to talk to a colleague for an hour... and she would certainly have known if I had remembered to ASK her, before getting sidetracked into a discussion of impossible deadlines, clients, weather... before she had to move on, and put the phon... Here mails are a good idea.
At other times it is simply frustrating - there are billions or at least hundreds of hits, all totally useless.
And here I have to say thanks to the Scandinavian KudoZ community, who are amazingly knowledgeable and helpful - they have baled me out many times.
But as long as I can meet my deadline, yes, challenging, and always an interesting learning experience.

I love my work and I finally got into a position where I can afford not taking tight deadlines. So, it's always exciting "hunting" a stubborn terms

I agree it can be fun and fascinating if I am really interested in the subject.
On the other hand, I recently had a job that required research in almost every sentence - even colleagues on KudoZ were stumped. The deadline was tight, and the research became very stressful. I felt as if I was plowing through quicksand.
