No, if I got the question correctly | May 17, 2011 |
healthy habit maybe refers to the position on the chair, distance from the screen, having breaks to avoid eye-fatigue and stretch my legs, correct use of lights and so on. Well in this case.... NO Well after the article... my answer is "not a lot", I go to the gym three times a day, I start my day playing chess and reading newspaper. I sleep 5 hours per night, I smoke.... and, I should take some weekend off

I answered yes because, even if I was not either sure about the meaning of the question, I thought it could only refer to the ergonomics while working or healthy habits in our daily lives. Regarding ergonomics, I received a very good presentation some months ago and, as I was already aware of these things, I only had to correct one aspect: putting a cushion between the chair and my back... and it feels much better! And as far as the link sent by Erika Pilar is concerned Sleep – I need 7-8 hours everyday, I just cannot do without it! And weekends are a great opportunity to sleep for a bit longer. If I feel a bit down, I am always happier in the morning. Don’t you? Exercise – I practice yoga twice a week and also at home, every time I feel tired of sitting. I try to use my bike as much as I can, even for going to the supermarket when the shopping is not too big. And on weekends and holidays, trekking in the mountains and bicycle trips are the rule, not the exception. We have to compensate for so many hours translating! If I watch television in the evening, I frequently ride my elliptical trainer. That way I don’t add more sitting hours, I get fit and I have the chance to listen to foreign programs in order to keep my language skills. That way I am not wasting time! Diet – As most of us work at home, we have the chance to cook and eat properly. Another important factor is drinking frequently, for our eyes can get more dehydrated by watching the screen for so many hours. I always have something to drink on my table. Stress – I start the day with 20 minutes meditation. That takes a lot of stress away and improves memory and concentration. Social – Once a week, I have breakfast with a couple of friends and that’s something I have been doing for years, even if I have a lot of work. It is better for me to work for a bit longer in the evening, but never miss that appointment. Laughing and talking about our lives or even about silly things is the best way to avoid a psychoanalyst! Free-lance translators work for many hours a day, but if we do it from our homes, we can save a lot of time. If we organize our timetable properly, we can do many more things than normal employees and even conduct a healthier life. | | | Thayenga Germany Local time: 21:12 Member (2009) English to German + ...
I keep those "health habits" that are feasible, e. g. "insert" a little stretching exercise while waiting for a page to load and proofreading, keeping everything, like dictionaries, reference books, even the coffee, a good distance away from the desk so that I have to either stretch far to reach them or get up. Still, the only exercise I do regularily is for my eyes. Other than that, I follow my body's "commands". So maybe I should have answered "yes".... Being diabetic, I've very little choice in the matter. I MUST exercise regularly. Almost every day (probably 5 or 6 days/week), I go for a walk of at least 30 minutes (sometimes 2 hours or more). I also do some strength training, but mostly pushups, crunches, pull-ups, some dumbbell exercises, all at home. I do not have a gym membership, or anything of the like. I'd love to go running, as I did when I was younger, but injuries prevent that. I also go rollerskating with my daughter on a fairly regular basis, which is great fun and great exercise. I also maintain a healthy diet, low in carbs and sugar, high in protein, fiber, etc. Lots of veggies, beans, and lean meat. (although I indulge in bacon sometimes). ▲ Collapse | | | No, and it worries me. | May 17, 2011 |
I smoke too much, and that's far from being a healthy habit. | | | I interpreted it completely differently! | May 17, 2011 |
I thought it meant things like not taking on too much work, setting unrealistic deadlines, letting clients dictate your schedule and payment terms, etc. But I guess not! | | | Manticore (X) Local time: 21:12 English to German + ...

I decided to start investing time for a healthier lifestyle 2 months ago. The reason was mainly that at only 23 I was having strong pain in my back and knees, definitely because of long sitting hours. Sleep: I need to work on that. I use to work late and to wake up early. I feel dizzy sometimes during the day and would like to take a nap, but I am thinking I will lose important time. Ideally for me would be to go to bed earlier. Exercise: I am now practicing Pilates 3-5 times a week, for 40-60 minutes each time. Great exercises for body and mind. If done properly, Pilates exercises become mind exercises as well. Like in Yoga, you have to find a balance between your body and the space around; you have to focus on the moves. I couldn´t ever think that a simple set of exercises can actually bring equilibrium in your life; can motivate you to start eating healthier; to think of your position, even when you don´t workout. Personally I find fitness and running very boring. Pilates is somehow so much more fun! Highly recommended! Diet: I try to eat healthy food. Our weekly shopping list contains mainly fruits and vegetables, milk and cheese. We do use meat and fish as well, but in small quantities. I used to smoke and I am not anymore. I drink 1-2 coffees a day and if I see chips or chocolate, I have to eat So, I still have to work on my diet. Stress: As said above, Pilates give me some time for focusing on other things than work and for a kind of meditation. I can always find 5 minutes relaxation in a fast chat with my sister, a great song or so. I enjoy cooking (healthy). It is relaxing as well and I have plants to take care of. I would say I can keep stress under control. Social: Well there are 2 types: real social life and online social life. I have both and try to maintain them at a certain level. I just moved in Holland, so I keep a strong contact with my family and friends via email, IM and so. I´ve started making friends here too and invite people for dinner sometimes or they invite us. We also go almost every Sunday to church and meet great people there. This “amount” of social life is more than enough for me. So basically I want to sleep more, to exercise more and to be more careful about the diet. I would also like to start doing eye exercises regularly and to stop using computer when not working. ▲ Collapse | | | No, and I am seriously worried about it | May 17, 2011 |
I knew what it meant immediately, because it's not happening in my life and I can see the toll on my health. Fortunately, I don't smoke or drink, but all the other criteria get the short shrift as I labor to meet my deadlines. | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Do you keep healthy habits in your professional career?
