Since I get easily distracted and start singing with all the original lyrics mixed with the material I'm translating or proofreading.

If I have a relatively relaxed schedule, I will sometimes listen to the radio, but I do find it distracting. I also find that if I put it on, the probability of receiving a phone call and thus having to switch it off again increases massively.

I always listen to the radio while translating as otherwise, I will get caught up in the noise outside, e.g. kids coming home from school and playing ball, neighbours chatting, etc. I listen to a 24-hour music station though and not people giving interviews as discussions would be too disruptive.

I like to listen to barroque music when I feel I loose my concentration. It wakes me up. Otherwise I listen to my CDs on the computer: the Wainwrights (Loudon, Rufus and Martha), the Divine Comedy, David Byrne, Joan as a policewoman, Antony and the Johnsons, Pink Martini...you name it. What I hardly do is to listen to songs in Spanish since that's the language I translate to.

I like a bit of jazz towards the end of the day... I tend to find music with lyrics too distracting.

Never while translating. Usually I listen to music while proofreading and/or post-editing. The volume is kept low while listening either to my own CDs (Native American, native Hawaiian) or, depending on my mood, to a variety of music on YouTube - without watching the videos, of course.

...with headphones, to provide a bit of impetus and help concentrate in an office environment with others on the telephone. This worked because if I couldn't hear my own phone ringing then someone would wave or hoy something at me to attract my attention. Now in my current one-man office, the headphones have had to go .

I always have the (Internet) radio on. I think it helps keep my brain working in English while I read Japanese text. I actually can't imagine working without music on.

Songs with no lyrics such as classical and orgel music make me concentrate better.
One of the key benefits of being a freelancer working from home is that I can listen to my music the whole day long. It's just great. I listen to my personal internet radio (last.fm), playing jazz, funk, soul and rock. While music helps me to stay focused when translating, it seems to distract me when proofreading.

I quite like listening to classical music when working, but I find anything with lyrics too distracting most of the time. If it is a very complicated job, I prefer total silence!
