Dont have time and I have "real" freinds anayway. I speak to my relatives abroad and some business partners via Skype sometimes. And other than that, I dont have time for these things anyway

Facebook Oct 8, 2010

I'm a bit of a Facebook-aholic! It's a bit of respite and social communication, which is good when you spend most of your days sitting on your own anyway.

Facebook is a luxury of the idle Oct 8, 2010

I have far more important things to do than upload my pictures for all the world to see (or edit in Photoshop).

I used to participate in "odnoklassniki" - a Russian version of Facebook - but got sick and tired in a few months and deleted my profile

Hyves Oct 8, 2010

Hyves is the largest social network here in the Netherlands, although I only use it for casual social contacts. I use LinkedIn professionally, but can't say I'm active with it at the moment.

No social networks for me Oct 8, 2010

The appeal of Facebook is a mystery to me. I mean, I like the internet, I like gadgets, smartphones, blogs, videogames and so on, but I just cannot see the point of social networks.

How do we (translators) use these networks professionally? Oct 8, 2010

ie to keep up to speed on developments in the industry, share resources, etc., which are things I find Twitter useful for. What about achieving new business? It would be interesting to hear some concrete examples. I think those who look down their noses at social media may be missing out.

Facebook Oct 8, 2010

I check my Facebook regularly and I enjoy taking this break and catching up with friends when otherwise I would be here on my own working. I don't live in my home country so it is a great way to see everyone's photos and show mine.

Well, I'm not looking down my nose at it, Oliver; I just can't see the point of it, as I said in my post. Facebook (et al) are enormous now and they are just as crowded with "information" as Google is, so I don't really see how it can be used as an effective marketing tool, or at any rate a tool that is more effective than Proz, Google, AdSense and all the traditional channels. I think Facebook is just another way to waste time.

I agree. I am somewhat passive on LinkedIn, but I do follow some of the discussion groups.
Proz.com is in fact the best social network for my purposes.

I can see that a new link uses LinkedIn very actively to introduce job candidates to employers looking for special skills in the UK, but not languages! Maybe we should start doing the same, but again, much of it goes on here on Proz.com.

Besides, there are only 24 hours in the day, and much of my social life goes on over the Net or phone already, as my family and real friends are somewhat far flung. So I try to give priority to direct contact and offline activity whenever possible.

Only facebook Oct 8, 2010

I kind of like it for catching up with people. I can't really be bothered with twitter and the others, mostly lack of time.... one is enough! I use LinkedIn as well but mostly for business. I don't look down my nose at any of it and if someone doesn't like it, I don't think they are necessarily being snobby. It's not for everyone, but if someone really does look down at it, that's their biz.

Facebook Oct 8, 2010

I honestly enjoy keeping up to date with my Brazilian and Norwegian families on FB. I am even learning new slang in Portuguese. I love knowing what the young people are up to. FB has brought me in touch with old friends I was missing and others that I thought I had lost.

Social networks Oct 8, 2010

I use Facebook for social purposes and Linkedin for professional matters.
I find Linkedin very useful as a professional tool.
At this time and age, translators should at least be well-informed on these networks.
