Fairly effective May 12, 2010

I don't think my photo is anything special, but I do think having a photo is important. I used to be a dancing elephant, which, while cute, didn't have the same professional image. Since putting a photo on my profile, the number of enquiries I receive has increased.

I suppose the question refers to the proz profile.
I haven't been unable to upload a photo, they appear to be the wrong size and I don't feel it's worth wasting time faffing about trying to change it...
The proof of the pudding etc...

just my picture May 12, 2010

I do not know what people "feel" when they see my picture, but as Mary said, having one is important, at least you have an idea of the person you're working with, talking to.
Actually, I prefer a picture (for freelancers) than a logo.

Feed-back
At the Nijmegen powwow, a Dutch colleague convinced me to include a picture in my profile. Some people told me since, "it looks professional" and others (at the Amersfoort conference) said, "I remember seeing you".

Should be effective May 12, 2010

I guess it's important to choose a good picture/logo because it represents you and it stays in mind more easily than many words.

If a picture tells a thousand words... May 12, 2010

When people find me, I always ask where.

The answer is usually "somewhere on the Internet". Some also say "on Proz".

I think that asking "Did you you pick me because of my face or my profile" would be stretching it a bit.

Let's face it (no pun intended): Would even a peer who was a good friend say that they thought your mugshot could use a bit of Photoshop enhancement? ... See more

That said, if you have a separate website, then obviously a communicative logo is a good idea.

Is a picture worth more than a thousand words? May 12, 2010

I have found this to be somewhat true. Now, I do not think I would have gotten any more assignments if my qualifications were subpar; however, I have found that some people remember me by my picture. It is the same picture I use when I skype or instantly chat with my clients.

I think translators should use a somewhat professional and friendly-looking picture though. I have seen a few overly artistic and even provocative pictures among fellow translators. It does make me wonde

It does make me wonder what kind of impression this makes on a serious and stressed PM looking for potential translators...?

I think a picture is an enhancement, so why not? May 12, 2010

I used to have a picture of myself in a T-shirt cuddling my two sons until someone kindly pointed out that although "very nice" it just wasn't professional. I had another one after that where it looked as though I was "shinning up a mango tree" - another peer suggestion!

So, a straightforward picture, trying to look relaxed and normal.

I don't know about effectiveness but May 12, 2010

my logo is my surname in a Chinese character drawn in an artistic way- it surely represents me!

Not effective May 12, 2010

My logo is temporary one. I would like a combination of my picture and my old logo.
One of our former colleagues had a combination of his picture and a logo.
Does anybody know how to "morph"/"make" such a combination?

second photo, still not pleased May 12, 2010

I'm onto my second photo.
First I had one of me with a big bouquet presented by a grateful client to mark 20 years of faithful slogging (though that was not obvious from the photo).
Now I look as though I've been shopping in Narnia.

I must get a better photo SOME DAY ..... I'm sure these two haven't prompted any enquiries !

A real photo seems to be more effective May 12, 2010

In the past, I used various cartoonish animations which humored some and made others remember me, yet irritated many more. I finally switched to a photo. It doesn't make me look professional, but at least it's professionally made. Or is it? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Why would it not be effective? May 12, 2010

What interests me is what are the positive and negative points for a picture (beyond reasonable quality). Will a good photograph get you more work?

Is the objective simply to look professional or are there more subtle, subliminal messages to be sent?

It is confusing, because on the one hand it should not matter what a translator looks like, but on the other we are told that people like to see who they are dealing with...

On the few occasions when I have looked for other translators to work with I have been more interested in their qualifications to do the job in question than their appearance.

I guess it is nice to have a photo, and even "correct" in some sense, but it is odd to think that it could affect a potential client's choice of translator.
