Does Read Iris Pro 11 count? Jul 2, 2009

(it's an optical recognition tool or OCR) Don't know what I'd do without it, I guess a lot more typing! Can't yet justify Trados, is it really THAT good ($)?

Once a year or every two years Jul 2, 2009

I always update my technology once a year, which includes a new laptop (if required, but after 2 years at the latest), Monitor, software anyway (or patches as they come).

This is yet another poll that poses a very subjective question, as the definition of "latest technologies" can vary from one person to another.
For example, another poster claims to change laptops at least every 2 years, whereas I would be extremely disgruntled if that were my rate of hardware updating! My old Toshiba works perfectly well for my purposes after at least 6 years, although I did reinstall the OS at Xmas (because it crashed, not because the laptop itself had any problems).

I installed WF basic a couple of years ago and it works OK for me, although I still haven't gotten around to learning how to use all its bells and whistles. I certainly don't want to upgrade to the new "professional" version, which looks and sounds a bit scary from my point of view.
If Windows Vista is an example of "latest technology", then Mr Gates can stick it where the sun don't shine! A more useless lumping great heap of software would be hard to find IMO. Consequently, I'm still using XP, not having the time or IT skills to learn open source like Linux.
As for Trados, don't get me started... although I do have a friend who swears by it; I also know someone who still does his translations with PAPER AND PEN then types them out on his PC, so I suppose that's both sides of the coin.
However, something I would like to see but which doesn't apear to be in the pipeline yet (maybe somebody knows better?) would be a machine translation software like the old Systran, but which the user could program to correct its many mistranslations, a sort of combined MT + TM program. It can't be that hard to devise, surely?
Oh, I almost forgot - I invested in a PDF -> Word Converter (SolidConverter) last year and it's helped me a lot, although I still believe the best method is to berate and nag my clients NOT TO SAVE DOCUMENTS IN PDF if there is any liklihood that they will have to be translated.

I have 4 PCs, I am obliged because of my work.

One All-in-One, one portable pc, one mini portable 10' and a desktop.

The first one had a problem with the mother board, and the reparation took 4 months, within the period of warranty.

So I was obliged to buy a notebook and meanwhile I saw a good offer for a mini notebook, and bought it.

Perhaps I exaggerate, but two years ago I risked to lose a big translation. It happens sometimes that two PCs crash, and even if you use an external hard disk, it's really difficult and cannot work.

Apart from that, technology is a passion for me, so I try to resist and do not buy any new technological device available in the market!

Also, in several forum threads about CAT tools, I see users 'freaking out' due to technical issues and so.. Has anyone calculated how many words could've been translated while the machine translator 'refuses to do its job'?

I do use OCR though, and microsoft document imaging fulfills my needs
Word Perfect is what I use for hard copies of certified translations. It also allows me to transform my documents in PDF that are accepted worldwide as safe. It is handy when a client needs a hard copy in China asap - I'll send him a pdf file and the hard copy is sent by mail. But what I like the most about WP is that it has a very good built-in thesaurus.

But, I'm addicted to books and dictionaries First thing when I start the computer: open two unabridged monolingual dictionaries. And this is where I invest the most

Old fashioned as I admittedly am, I would have never become a translator if it weren't for Grad students who would ask me to translate scientific papers (pen and paper rush jobs - very unprofessional and cheap) and computers

Thanks for the interesting poll

An option was missing among the posible answers: yes, if it is worth it.

I am not afraid to invest in technology as long as I know it will produce a return on the investment. I believe many of the people who simply answered this question with yes are blindly investing in technology and never really take advantage of what they buy. As for answering "yes, when a particular job justifies it" - are you people serious? It would have to be one hell of a job to make it worth it, knowing that you take the risk never to use that particular technology again.

Do you mean "all of them"? Jul 2, 2009

Or just some?

I make it a point to invest in my business by what I mean investing in my education, reference sources and technology - most often new software.

However due to limited resources I have to be selective in what I buy.

Best Regards
Stanislaw

Trados Jul 3, 2009

I bought Trados last year as I was offered a big job from a regular client that required I use Trados. I'd been thinking of buying the package for some time but the cost was enough to put me off buying for myself. This job was more than enough to cover to the cost, and happily coincided with a group buy here on proz. I had a few days of manic self training and then was away. I would have lost a lot more than it cost if I'd refused the job, and my client was happy for me to go ahead even with the... See more

I would have lost a lot more than it cost if I'd refused the job, and my client was happy for me to go ahead even with the uncertainty of being a new user. That's the only time I've spent money to fulfil a clients request, but would happily do so again if the job itself paid enough for e to buy the technology and still have something left over, and if it would be useful to me again in future. Most of the cost I'd get back eventually by claiming it against tax anywayCollapse

Yes, because M$ offers student licenses and every year I register for an IT-related course. Next year, I will be a Windows7 and Office14 early bird. A year later, the revoloutionary Trados 11 + certifcation package will be availalbe and all will jump to buy its "early bird" version. Pity they don't give a student discount. Dragon dictate in 4 languages is really worth its price.
Some packages can be downloaded for free at sourceforge.net and others at those Swedes...

Fair enough, they don't appeal to a lot of people -- and it doesn't necessarily mean those people are Luddites, they may simply work in an area where CAT tools don't prove very useful -- but exactly what do you mean when you say you 'know' when you see a text that has been translated using a CAT tool?

Given that you're not a fan of CAT tools, may I infer you are suggesting these translations are in some way inferior? And, if so, how?

I do not manage to use it.

In any case I prefer XP to Vista.

Thanks for your suggestion!

Replied other, but in fact I have just invested in new technology! Jul 4, 2009

Following the recent accident with my laptop (which ran on vista), I have struggled on with a work laptop than has no internet access and a family computer.

Yesterday I bought a dinky new netbook. It runs on Windows xp, so I could load Office and anti-virus on to it.

I think it will be really useful for work and keeping in touch with people.

I haven't got enough translation work to merit a TM at the moment.
