Source text - English Havana, Cuba (first day)
At José Martí International Airport, Havana, jets are climbing into the sky above the gleaming façade of the brand new air-conditioned terminal but I’m in the car park, where the unconditioned air is 34 degrees centigrade and I’m leaning up against the side of a truck for some shade.
My bags are in the taxi, whose back axle is hoisted up on one side whilst our driver struggles to replace a flat tyre. The vehicle looks undignified, like a dog with its leg up.
If I’d wanted to get an instant flavour of what Havana was like in Hemingway’s time, they could not have done much better than finding me this beleaguered but handsome tangerine Plymouth, which dates from 1951 - the year he was writing The Old Man and the Sea. Even if it does have a 1960s Russian engine.
When we eventually hit the road and turn on to a wide, empty highway outside the airport, almost the first thing I see is a faded billboard advertising the Floridita bar, with Hemingway’s countenance sending out a broad, if unconvincing, smile of welcome.
I sink back into the leather seat with a delicious feeling of anticipation. It doesn’t last long. Half-way into Havana we hit the road again, only literally this time. There is a dull thud from under my seat and the Plymouth lurches painfully as the replacement tyre explodes, and the car slews round on its wheel rim before coming to a halt beside an embarrassingly crowded bus stop.
No one bats an eyelid. Not a hint of amusement, concern or even mild derision. It must happen all the time. The bus, which arrives a moment later, completely ignoring a tangerine Plymouth facing the wrong way, in the middle of the road, is unlike any form of public transport I’ve ever seen.
It’s an articulated hut for people, about fifty foot long with both ends higher than the middle - hence, I suppose, the local name for them - camels. With a belch of black smoke, the tractor unit hauls it away leaving us with the prospect of trying to reach Havana on three wheels.
No tyre is to be found, so I unload into another taxi, this time a slightly more modern ’57 Chevy and, fingers crossed, proceed towards Havana.
Old Havana, close to the port and the sturdy Spanish colonial forts and palaces, is lively and picturesque and being slowly, carefully and beautifully restored. Which is a pity, as the mottled and peeling façades seem much closer to the spirit of this hot, steamy, hard-pressed city.

Na lotnisku międzynarodowym im. José Martíego w Hawanie samoloty wzbijają się w niebo ponad lśniącą fasadą nowiutkiego, klimatyzowanego terminalu, ale ja stoję na parkingu, gdzie nieklimatyzowane powietrze ma 34 stopnie, więc w poszukiwaniu cienia opieram się o bok ciężarówki.
Moje torby są w taksówce, której tylna oś jest uniesiona z jednej strony, a nasz kierowca mozoli się z wymianą przebitej opony. Samochód wygląda nieprzyzwoicie, jak pies z podniesioną łapą.
Jeżeli chciałem szybko zakosztować Hawany z czasów Hemingwaya, raczej nie mogłem trafić na nic lepszego niż ten okazały, mandarynkowy plymouth z 1951 roku – tego samego, w którym Hemingway pisał Starego człowieka i morze. Nawet jeśli auto ma rosyjski silnik z lat 60.
Kiedy wreszcie ruszamy w drogę i wjeżdżamy na szeroką, pustą autostradę pod lotniskiem, właściwie pierwszą rzeczą, jaką zauważam, jest wyblakły billboard reklamujący bar Floridita, do którego oblicze Hemingwaya zaprasza z szerokim, choć nieprzekonującym uśmiechem.
Zagłębiam się w skórzany fotel z rozkosznym uczuciem niecierpliwego wyczekiwania. Ale nie trwa ono długo. W połowie drogi do Hawany znów uderzamy w drogę, tylko że tym razem dosłownie. Pod moim siedzeniem rozlega się głuchy odgłos i plymouthem szarpie boleśnie - to wybuchła zapasowa opona. Samochód obraca się na obręczy koła i zatrzymuje tuż przy koszmarnie zatłoczonym przystanku autobusowym.
Nikt nawet okiem nie mrugnie. Ani śladu rozbawienia, troski czy choćby lekko drwiącego uśmiechu. Widocznie ciągle się to zdarza. Autobus, który przyjeżdża chwilę później – zupełnie ignorując stojącego na środku drogi mandarynkowego plymoutha zwróconego w niewłaściwą stronę – jest niepodobny do publicznych środków transportu, jakie w życiu widziałem.
To naczepowy barak dla ludzi, długi na jakieś 15 metrów, a oba jego końce są wyższe niż środek. Pewnie dlatego miejscowi nazywają go „wielbłądem“. Ciągnie go traktor, wyrzucając przy tym z siebie chmurę czarnego dymu, a nam pozostaje perspektywa dotarcia do Hawany na trzech kołach.
Zapasowej nigdzie nie udaje się znaleźć, więc pakuję się do następnej taksówki – tym razem jest to trochę nowocześniejszy chevrolet, rocznik 57 – zaciskam kciuki i ruszamy w dalszą drogę do Hawany.
Stara Hawana, położona w pobliżu portu i solidnych hiszpańskich fortów i pałaców kolonialnych, jest malownicza, pełna życia i z wolna odnawiana – starannie i pięknie. A szkoda, bo plamiaste, łuszczące się fasady zdają się być bliższe duchowi tego gorącego, parnego i ciężko doświadczonego miasta.
