Every newborn in Thailand is offered a blood test to check for the presence of thyroid or metabolic disorders, i.e. hypothyroidism and phenylketonuria (PKU). Usually, blood sample is taken between 48 to 72 hours after birth by pricking the baby’s heel or via venipuncture, for few drops of blood onto the absorbent paper. The baby’s heel may become red at the pricked site, and some babies may have bruising, but this usually disappears quickly.
Congenital hypothyroidism may occur in on out of 3,500 newborns. A baby with this problem does not create enough thyroid hormone, which could affect growth and mental development. A baby with congenital hypothyroidism is treated with thyroid hormone replacement and will need regular medical care.
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited disease in which the body cannot metabolize a protein called Phenylalanine. It is estimated that approximately one baby out of 200,000 is born with PKU. Without treatment, PKU can cause developmental delay and mental retardation. A baby with PKU is given a special formula and diet, and needs regular medical care.
If the result is abnormal, the blood test will need to be repeated to confirm for specific diagnosis and treatment should be started right away.
Source text - English Windsor Castle was founded by William the Conqueror (r.1066-87) at the end of the eleventh century. It has been the home of 39 monarchs and is the oldest royal residence in the British Isles to have remained in continuous use.
The castle is one of the official residences of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen is Head of State of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Head of the Commonwealth.
The Queen is officially in residence at Windsor twice a year: at Easter, and again in June, when the annual Garter Service is held in St George’s Chapel. The Castle is used as an alternative to Buckingham Palace for ceremonial visits by foreign heads of state. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh (b.1921) spend most of their private weekends at Windsors.
The State Apartments are frequently used by members of the Royal Family for events in support of organizations of which they are patrons, and for the annual Windsor Festival. Royal weddings, baptisms and birthday celebrations have been held at Windsor for centuries. These have included the marriage of The Prince of Wales (b.1948) and The Duchess of Cornwall (b.1947) at Windsor Guildhall in 2005.
