It is almost unbelievable: £5 for a digital multimeter with several extra functions and a set of leads. Surely that isn’t enough to manufacture a decent piece of equipment? To find out how useful such a multimeter is and how accurate it is, we bought a cheap multimeter and gave it a thorough investigation.
You often see them in the £5 box near the checkout at Wallmart(-ish) outlets and builders’ markets: multimeters that appear to be able to measure everything. Voltage, current, resistance, diodes and transistors; and all that for only £5! You can’t help but wonder how they manage to sell such an item for so little money. More importantly, it would be interesting to know how accurate such a meter was and if it would be suitable for use in the lab or only for general use around the house. To find the answer to this question the author took a great financial risk and bought a meter in order to examine it closely.
Circuit diagram
At first sight the inside of the meter appears very straightforward.
On the component side of the double-sided PCB we see one IC, a few capacitors and resistors, a diode, a fuse, a preset and a buzzer (refer to the photos in Figure 1). On the solder side we find the connectors and contacts for the function switch and the LC display (1b).
The most ingenious part is the rotary switch. This consists of six slide-contacts that are mounted on the underside of a plastic knob (1c), and another set of contacts spread along 11 concentric rings on the PCB. This switch is used to select a completely different configuration of the circuit for each of its 20 positions.
The complete circuit diagram for the multimeter is shown in Figure 2. Broadly speaking, the circuit can be divided into three sections:
• The function switch that selects the right circuit configuration for the required measurement.
• The voltmeter, built around an ICL7106-type chip, which takes care of the actual measurement and also drives the LC display.
• Two ladder networks consisting of precision resistors, which are used to scale the input signal or act as a reference.
The six slide switches (SW1 to SW6) make up a single rotary switch, which is used to select the different configurations.

E’ quasi incredibile: solo 5 sterline per un multimetro digitale con molte funzioni supplementari ed un set di puntali. Non è sicuramente abbastanza per fabbricare una apparecchiatura decente? Per scoprire quanto può essere utile un tale multimetro e quanto è preciso, ne abbiamo acquistato uno e lo abbiamo sottoposto ad un approfondito esame.
Questi multimetri si possono vedere di frequente nella loro scatola quotata 5 sterline vicino alle casse dei punti vendita Wallmart e nei negozi di strumenti di misura: multimetri che sembrano in grado di misurare ogni cosa. Tensione, corrente, resistenza, diodi e transistor; e tutto questo per sole 5 sterline! Non si può fare a meno di chiedersi come si riesce a vendere un oggetto simile a prezzo così basso.
Ancora più importante sarebbe conoscere quanto è accurato come misura e se potrebbe essere adatto ad un uso di laboratorio o è da impiegare solo per usi generali in casa. Per trovare la risposta a questa domanda l’autore si è preso un grande rischio finanziario e ha acquistato il multimetro per poterlo esaminare da vicino.
Lo schema
A prima vista l'interno del multimetro sembra molto semplice. C’e un circuito stampato a doppia faccia sul cui lato componenti si vede un IC, alcuni condensatori e resistenze, un diodo, un fusibile, un potenziometro e un buzzer (vedi foto in Figura 1).Sul lato saldature si trovano i connettori ed i contatti per lo switch delle funzioni e delle portate come pure i contatti per il display LCD (1b). La parte più ingegnosa è il commutatore rotante: esso consiste di sei contatti striscianti posizionati nella parte sottostante della manopola di plastica (1c) mentre un altro insieme di contatti fissi è distribuito su 11 anelli concentrici posizionati sul circuito stampato lato saldature. Il commutatore è usato per selezionare una completamente differente configurazione del circuito per ciascuna delle sue 20 posizioni.
Lo schema completo del circuito del multimetro è riportato in Figura 2. In linea generale il circuito può essere diviso in tre sezioni:
· Il commutatore delle funzioni che selezione la giusta configurazione per la misura desiderata.
· Il voltmetro, basato su un chip ICL7106 che misura le tensioni e pilota anche il display LCD.
· Due reti di attenuazione costituite da resistori di precisione usati per attenuare il segnale di ingresso o che agiscono come riferimento.
I sei contatti striscianti (SW1 – SW6) formano un singolo commutatore rotativo a più vie la cui posizione determina le differenti configurazioni del multimetro. Per ciascuna posizione del commutatore rotativo i suoi contatti striscianti sono sempre su una sola linea…….
