Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 10, 2014:
Thesis/dissertation The terms are used interchangeably in the United States, but there may be a distinction elsewhere.
Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 10, 2014:
Explanation I can attest, as one who has done it and worked in the graduate school at Georgetown University, there are several final stages to awarding the degree: (1) presentation of the thesis, at which point the readers/mentors/committee have the opportunity to make final comments; (2) defense of the thesis, when the candidate sits before his/her committee and invited outsiders and answers any questions they may have; (3) signoff by the members of the committee; and (4) award of the degree in a graduation ceremony. The defense is a time-honored tradition that goes back to the middle ages - at the University of Coimbra there is a hall where candidates defended their thesis in front of a large audience. The date the thesis is defended is different from the date of graduation. It can happen that not all the committee members sign off after the defense. I have a friend who defended her thesis, but one member of her committee requested further changes in her thesis, so she did not graduate for two more years.
It is also a time-honored tradition that the candidate may be called "doctor" once he/she has defended his/her thesis.

Marlene Curtis Jan 10, 2014:
A doctoral student works on a dissertation or thesis for many years and, therefore, "year defended thesis" does not apply.

disagree Muriel Vasconcellos : As one who has defended a doctoral thesis, I can attest that submission and defense are two different stages in the process. You submit it to your readers. Once they have commented, your defense is scheduled.

submission and defense/defence - obviously may occur in different years.

Time between submission and defense: The amount of time passes from thesis submission to actual thesis defense is extremely variable. You can expect to wait between 6 weeks and 6 months from submission to actual defense. So you need to be very patient and plan accordingly!

In July I finally submitted my PhD-thesis on “High-resolution modelling of surface-atmosphere interactions and convection development at Nam Co Lake, Tibetan Plateau” and am currently waiting for my defense.
I am officially in limbo, or whatever the weird stage between submission and defense is called.

I think the time between submission and defense varies wildly by school and department (I'm at the U of Wisconsin-Madison). Very glad to be almost done with the damn thing.

Get your work published, plan well
To get a postdoc in USA, the best way is to utilize the time between thesis submission and defense for applications. Also get your work published before applying to a lab.

Then, all of a sudden, my third year was a smooth, easy ride straight into submission. This was quite a surprise given the rough ride in the first few years (where I nearly quit a couple of times). The time between submission and defense was horrible, though.

If there are any dates on which the student will be unable to attend, then the RRO must be informed at the time of submission. There will normally be a minimum of six weeks between submission of the thesis and the date of the viva voce examination.
