the agreste
In Brazil, the agreste (Portuguese pronunciation: [aˈɡɾɛʃtʃi]) is a narrow zone in the states of Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia between the coastal forest zona da mata and the semiarid sertão.

: Unless the text is about geography, I think it would be better to use a term that is familiar to English readers.

: Agreste could be the best solution in the context, since it is the name of the region and the word is capitalized.

[Pernambuco] back country
I don't think there's a need to too specific here. "Back country" does not characterize the geographic nature of the terrain. Note the following examples:

the Pernambucano Agreste region
Discussion
isolated
remote
undeveloped
difficult to access
The term may apply to various regions that are reasonably close to urban areas but are:
not immediately accessible by car
at relatively high altitude
not generally frequented by human visitors
limited to human-powered vehicles
While the term "backcountry" is roughly comparable to the term "wilderness", they are not necessarily equivalent. "Wilderness" implies more the condition, whereas "backcountry" implies more the position. Backcountry is similar to hinterland
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backcountry
I'm not saying 'wilderness' is wrong - my first inclination was to agree with Marlene, but after I thought about it, I realized that for US readers, at least, it's always thought to be heavily forested - that's an association we have because of the wilderness lands in the US. Also, by definition, there is NO human habitation in a wilderness. The reference cites Pão de Açucar and Ingazeiras, which is a much more "lush" region than the agreste in Pernambuco, so it's not an applicable example. I'm still opposed to using a term that is obscure for English readers when an equivalent exists.
