I think you have some leeway with this phrase. The point is that the appearance is improved so that the image "reads" or can be interpreted more clearly but there are many ways to say that. I'd translate the whole line like this: Glazing or toning of the losses and superficial abrasions of the painted surface with watercolor with the scope of regaining the color relationships of the image.
