Environmental biotechnology started with wastewater treatment
at the turn of the 19/20th century [1] and provided services
to remove contaminants from wastewater and soil, to monitor
pollutants and toxic materials in the environment and to capture
valuable products from waste [2]. In recent decades, it has offered
many solutions for environmental pollution and has become a
promising technology for sustainable development. Biodegradation,
which plays important roles in environmental biotechnology,
consists of processes by which organic substances are broken
down by living organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and plants.
Biodegradation provides useful strategies to clean up many types of
recalcitrant and xenobiotic pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbon (PAH), organic metals, and halogenated or sulfur compounds
[2–6]. Owing to the integration of genetics and process
engineering , biodegradation and decomposition pathways and the
regulatory mechanisms for removing many organic pollutants have
been elucidated, and many engineering strategies have been developed
to harness this power.
