I agree with Tony's comments.
so bulk samples are samples done with bulk/solid pure aluminum, or bulk/solid aluminum 6061 alloy
as opposed to foam samples done with "foam made from bulk aluminum 6101 alloy".

chips
It may refer to aluminum chips, rather than aluminum sheets or other processed form, which you can count piece by piece (like 2 sheets). Well, chips can be counted piece by piece but I think they are usually counted by weight.

: I think that is the wrong sense of 'bulk' here, I believe it means 'masse', i.e. 'solid'. This would be consistent with the techniques being described. / seems to me that would contrast better with the 'foam' technique, don't you think?
