Da Italiano a Inglese Tecnico/Meccanico Automobilistico/Auto e autocarri interior material and craftsmanship
"Le plastiche sono talvolta rumorose; si percepisce passaggio d'aria dalle guarnizioni dei finestrini anteriori."

What would "guarnizioni" mean here?

Discussion

Jeffrey Schwartz Jan 16, 2014:
Shera The original Italian wording is a problem with the translation being "the plastics are noisy sometimes" and air is passing through the seal, trim or gasket. Since the subject area is cars, I don't know (and I will admit I don't know everything) cars windows, gaskets, trim or seals made out of plastic. Windows must be made out of safely glass (this is by law) and the gaskets, trims or seals are made with rubber as plastic is too hard. You are correct as it is not clear if the window is noisy or the gasket, trim or seal is noisy. Also in doubt is the finestrini indication. I have a Ford C-Max that has a finestrini but it is a permanently sealed window so I would find it hard to believe that the air was passing through unless a manufacturing defect is indicated. In any case, I would not use gasket is this instance. If we were talking about old cars, then there might be some sense to this as many old cars had the finestrini or front wing window and they did tend to have the air passing through problem.

Jeffrey I thought about that and wondered whether it was a leaky/cracked gasket that made the noise. No way to tell from the context given.
Jeffrey Schwartz Jan 15, 2014:
The use of the word Gasket in this context Gasket implies a permanent seal. It is unclear in the context of guarnizioni and finestrini if this is the case. For example, I would not use gasket to describe the car side window seal where you could open or shut the window but would use seal or trim.
