Module

page fractions
Newspapers are often described in columns and millimetres (used to be inches). Journalists brag or moan that their articles were so many columns and inches. Ads are sold in 1/2/3…12 column breadths by so many millimetres or by set sizes which usually correspond to so many columns by so many millimetres. Ads filling these spaces are called display ads.

: Your link only refers to adv ertisements, which have always had several standard sizes, and not to press articles in general.

Discussion
A field-based grid is an array of evenly spaced squares (usually) A column-based grid is based on a number of columns, subsequently divided into fractions by length. Both systems laid out symmetrically and asymmetrically as well as free-form are in use. Newspapers often sell ads by set lengths and call them modules as they are standard size and allow for easy lay-out and admit no surprises. All subdivisions of pages whether field/modules or columns x length are page fractions irrespective of what content fills them. there's a great series published by AVA on format/layout/typography. layout is described as "an arrangement of part etc. according to a plan".
In web design, grid based layouts can be considered in terms of cells (the blocks) or columns (columns). Both are intended to coordinate and contrast alignment.See the excellent http://www.welie.com/patterns/showPattern.php?patternID=grid...
