French term

cartel

French to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Could someone please tell me what those little cards identifying works of art in a museum (Title, Artist, Year, Collection, etc.) are typically called in English?
(N.B. -- whereas I'm certain this is called a 'cartel' in French -- one of those strange cases of knowing something in the language you're proficient in, but not in your own! -- this meaning is not even given in the Petit Robert: is it really that specialised?)
Thanks in advance.

HOW TO READ A LABEL
You can learn a lot about a work of art by reading its identifying label.

name plate

If you wish, you can choose to have a brass name plate affixed to the center bottom of your frame at no extra charge. Each name plate will be beautifully engraved with the title of your masterpiece and the artist's name.

Sorry having read your question more thoroughly I can see you mean the little plaque on the wall but which isn't actually part of the frame.

I was misled by this dictionary definition :
cartel
nom masculin
(de cartel 1 )

* Cartouche, plaquette, étiquette fixés sur le cadre d'un tableau, le socle d'une statue et portant une inscription qui identifie l'œuvre.

cartel

Although I've never heard of the term in an artistic meaning - in either French or English - I found it on Quebec's Grand dictionnaire terminologique, on online tool run by the Office québécois de la langue française.

I got 106 Google hits for "cartel d'exposition".

But I only got 5 hits for "exhibition cartel". It seems much less used in English, although apparently legit.
