Translation - English Moonflower: Mystery in the form of a perfume
In the Amazon, there is a flower wrapped in mystery. A species that blooms only once every year, in the light of the full moon, exuding a very expressive scent. The Moonflower enchants many researche rs. A white flower with a red stem, it is an exuberant species, which grows on the Blackwater riverbanks of the Amazon, and which now serves as inspiration for a new line launched by Natura Ekos.
Technology, a lot of research, and a touch of art were needed to create a fragrance for the new Ekos cologne. Through a review of the literature, documents and stories about the species of Selenicereus, the Bio-agricultural sector of Natura found, that the botanical name Selene, means Goddess of the Moon. T he research also detailed the botanical description of the plant and the scent exuded by the Moonflower (*). The British illustrator, Margaret Mee revealed the flower’s beauty by devoting her life to drawing species of Amazon Flora. "We knew of Margaret Mee’s work and her commitment to the conservation of the Amazon Forest. We also studied the work of a researcher who made a detailed description of the plant’s scent. The perfume is only exuded at the moment in which the plant blooms and for a very short period. All these references were paramo unt when planning the project," says Deborah Castellani a Natura Bio-agricultural researcher.
There were some particular difficulties in working with the Moonflower. Due to all the characteristics that make the plant so unique, it was not feasible to use it directly as an ingredient in the product. "We are talking about a species that only exists in the region of the Rio Negro, which blooms at night and only blooms one night out of the year. Margaret Mee waited for many years to be able to see the flower and inhale the scent only once," explains Deborah. But it was possible to get a composition of ingredients that could reproduce the scent and mysterious atmosphere of the plant. This was the mission of the perfumer Veronica Kato. "My idea was to try and interpret the moment in which the flower blooms and permeates its surroundings. To be able to express in a fragrance all the sensations of that place, not only within the flower, but also its surroundings, the moment in which it blooms, uniting the plant with the mystery, the sensuality, the river and the night in an aromatic medley," explains Veronica.
With the help of scientific research information and from data which analyzes the chromatograms of the Moonflower (*) the Natura perfumer developed a unique fragrance, "The chromatography is produced using a device that captures the scent and parses its components. We studied the article of a researcher who used a chromatograph at the time in which the Moonflower bloomed allowing him to describe the major scents in the highest concentration, amongst other data," explains Deborah. With the information about the Moonflower, the Forest of Igapó, the Blackwater riverbanks and the artistic touch (which cannot be left out), the perfumer Veronica Kato arrived at a formula. "In the world of perfume, everyone says that making a perfume is a mixture of art and science. My work was not only to reproduce a smell, but to translate the whole atmosphere around that plant into a differentiated fragrance," the perfumer emphasized.
Portuguese to English: Protocol for Halitosis Assessmen General field: Medical
Translation - English Protocol for Halitosis Assessment
Initially, the general physician should bear in mind that halitosis complaints amongst the general population are common. However, many patients confuse the distinctions between true halitosis and that "bitter mouth" sensation. Some patients seek treatment of their own accord (self-diagnosis) or due to the complaints of relatives and friends (amongst others). The reliability level of the information given by friends and relatives must be taken into consideration. In our experience, some cases were misdiagnosed due to biased information from a partner about the patient. Furthermore, there is also physiologic halitosis, which can be misinterpreted as a disease, when, in fact, it is quite normal. The oral malodor that the vast majority of people experience upon awakening is considered to be physiologic halitosis, once it disappears after eating and brushing your teeth. It is considered to be physiologic due to reduced saliva production during sleep which increases the putrefaction of flaking cellular remains in the mouth, in addition to the extended period of overnight fasting . If the halitosis persists even after eating and brushing your teeth further investigation is necessary.
Some people will complain that they have halitosis when in reality they do not have it. This is known as psychosomatic halitosis, also known as halitophobia, it is an imagined halitosis. When these patients are subjected to testing, such as; physical examinations, organoleptic tests, and the Halimeter (VSC’s) test, they generally, have normal results. Psychosomatic halitosis, is in fact, a psychological problem, which also may be associated with Olfactory Reference Syndrome (ORS). Olfactory Reference Syndrome (ORS), is a complex psychological illness related to changes in body awareness which in turn lead to social isolation which requires specialized treatment. These patients should be referred to a psychologist for an evaluation. If the halitosis is a psychological symptom, there is no reason for further examination, since, ultimately no conventional treatments will be effective.
It is therefore very important to conduct a comprehensive anamnesis, including the patient’s medical history and dental records (complete as possible) as well as the administration of an objective test on all patients who complain of halitosis. In our experience, the most widely used instrument is the Halimeter (VSC’s), since it provides a numerical index.
The oral cavity is responsible for 90% of halitosis cases, and the respiratory tract is responsible for 8%, the gastrointestinal tract and other various causes account for only 2%. Since the mouth is the primary source of halit osis, it is essential to perform a specific analysis of the nasal and oral cavity. Unfortunately, it is not every dentist that can do a complete evaluation into all the various causes of halitosis. When the specialist is not focused on the disease, some important information might be overlooked. Some mild infections such as gingivitis, the presence of dental plaque, and white tongue may go undetected when the dental examination is not focused on the various causes of halitosis.
