It’s been a long time since the world became a small global village, in which information flows from one place to another at lightning speed with almost no interference. Surfers talk to other surfers in different countries, and any self-respecting company makes business overseas as well. The single obstacle remaining is, obviously, the language barrier. As long as we fail to understand each other’s language, the world will still remain far and distant.
Due to an accelerated globalization, a strong need for translation services has emerged. According to a research conducted by “Common Sense”, this demand is due to grow by 12% annually, while translation services and technology markets volumes are estimated at 33 billion dollars. Indeed, translation services for the consumer market exist since the dawn of Internet, with countless players in the field such as Google, Microsoft and – in Hebrew – Rav Milim, Morfix, Babylon, etc.
The current efforts in the field are conducted through two main channels. First: improvement of translation engines, in order to make them more accurate. Second: at the same time, developing new technologies that allow to translate everything, in any place, and in any situation.
Improving translation quality is a touchy issue: while high-quality translation of words has been already achieved, translation of phrases and whole documents still remains inadequate – especially in Hebrew. But time has its effects, and translation is improving. “Companies keep working on words and concepts translation from one language to another, in order to reach the highest quality”, explains Liath Sadeh-Schternberg, Marketing & Sales VP at Babylon, the Israeli translation company. Until that happens, companies are still offering translation services by actual “flesh & blood” translators1 – Babylon for instance offers this service, and the same is true for www.onehourtranslation.com.
But the second channel, the one that relates to the means by which we translate, is advancing at a very fast pace. True, we are still far from the famous “Babylon Fish” -- from the novel “Guide for the Galactic Hitchhiker” -- that you tuck in your ear in order to understand anything spoken in other languages. But we are getting there with confidence. In the past, online dictionaries were accessible exclusively through PCs, and offered mainly basic features: entering words and phrases and delivering their translation. Smartphones were a leap forward: not only can we “take along” the online dictionaries as we wish, but we also got new capabilities.
One such capability is to take a picture of real texts as we see them – on posters, signs, or pages – and translate them, without having to type it into the handset. Google – a regular guest in any innovative technology review – performed some weeks ago an update of its “Google Translate” app, which now enables to take pictures of actual texts, such as restaurant menus for example, then touch-select the desired segment, and immediately receive the translation. This, by the way, is an upgrade of a similar option that has been available in Google’s “Goggles” app for almost two years.

Currently, Google’s application is one of the few that support Hebrew translation of a picture. “Babylon Touch” is an application that works in a similar way, but provides only translation of single words. For instance: if you’re reading an article and run into a word that you don’t understand, you can take a picture of the text, select the specific word, and get it translated.
“Word lens” app takes this issue one step forward, by use of Augmented Reality, for instance: you aim the smartphone towards a sign in a foreign language, and the translation is shown on the screen like on the sign itself, as it were.
Siri, the translator
Together with the technological development of visual translation, we see a significant leap in phonetic translation technology. The system identifies speech, converts it to text and translates it, and then reads it aloud. In the last two years, a large increase has taken place in the number of programs offering such services. Popular applications such as “SpeechTrans” and ”jibbigo” can, inter alia, identify speech and give back vocal translation. Neither of these two apps supports Hebrew but, luckily enough, we have “Google Translate”, which includes a “listen” setting that enables you to record a word or a sentence, and play it back in another language. This app supports Hebrew quite well: you can voice-translate from Hebrew to Italian, Spanish, English and additional languages, and vice versa. No doubt, a must-have application for your next trip.
Actually, the application enables translation of face to face conversations. For instance: you walk into a shop in Argentina to buy a bottle of non-carbonated water, but the salesman speaks no English whatsoever. You read aloud your request to the handset, and the smartphone utters the phrase in Spanish.
The aspiration is to incorporate this capability to the Personal Assistant app, like Siri in iPhone. “We are entering into an area in which we take products like Siri and connect them to translation. This allows performing tasks in other languages as well. “Thus, Siri finds not only interest areas, but also translates”, reveals Sadeh-Schternberg from Babylon.
What turns out to be more important is simultaneous translation of phone conversations. This an essential need for business people , for instance, who want to of have a conversation with colleagues in another country, but they don’t speak their language. In the past it was possible to include in the conversation a simultaneous interpreter, but this is seen as an expensive solution and, in addition, business people are not eager to talk about sensitive issues when somebody else listens.

This service by Lexifone has, naturally, some limits and shortcomings. For instance: the speech during conversation has to be slow and gradual – phrase by phrase – in addition to the required standby time for each translation. A flowing conversation is out of the question, and the parties cannot interrupt each other’s speech.
An Israeli startup, Lexifone, has recently launched a unique service in precisely that orientation. The target: to connect by phone two people who do not speak the same language. Lexifone has developed a technology that knows how to do that without human intervention, i.e. an automatic simultaneous translator.
The Company was founded in 2010 by CEO and Chairman Ike Sagie, a former Manager and Senior Researcher at IBM Laboratories. Sagie holds a PhD from the Technion, and has specialized in Computational Linguistics. His son Itay serves as Sales VP.
Efficiency in border crossings
The procedure is simple: dial a special number, enter the target number, and you are connected. A short tone is heard, and then you say a sentence. After a short pause, during which the system processes the information, the person in the other end hears the translation. This person then presses the pound key, and speaks in his or her language. In turn, the other party hears the translation. The price of the service includes the cost of the overseas call, while Lexifone pockets the difference. “We are a telephony company, sensitive to your language”, states Ike Sagie. “A business person will need three things from now on: a PC, a telephone, and Lexifone”, adds Itay with a smile.
Lexifone does require neither internet connection nor program installation. It functions with every service, VOIP, cellular or line phone. Language processing, voice recognition, and translation are made in the company’s servers, and not in the telephone itself. With Lexifone, It is also possible to hold face to face conversations.
The advantages of Lexifone can also be implemented by establishments providing international services. Governments, welfare offices, and border crossings, which deal with immigrants and foreign populations -- such as Mexicans in Los Angeles or Turks in Berlin – are currently investing considerable amounts in human translation services. Lexifone can offer similar results, with significant savings. It’s also suitable for private customers: hotels could offer this service to guests, who could call local attractions from the rooms’ telephones, while speaking in their own language.
This service by Lexifone has, naturally, some limits and shortcomings. For instance: the speech during conversation has to be slow and gradual – phrase by phrase – in addition to the required standby-time for each translation. A flowing conversation is out of the question, and the parties cannot interrupt each others’ speech. Moreover, the surroundings have to be sterile – meaning devoid of background noise. Sagie Senior points out that “also with a human interpreter, the conversation has to be conducted in a concise manner”.
Not yet in Hebrew
At this stage, the system does not yet support Hebrew. Lexiphone’s analyses are conducted based on existing phonetic and semantic statistics available, for some languages, in databases. People at Lexifone explain that, as of now, not enough statistics of Hebrew have been collected in order to facilitate translation. And if you have hoped to talk in English with a Chinese colleague – it seems that you can’t do that either, as the system is not yet capable of translating unknown foreign accents.
However, Lexifone does support enough languages as to enable it to reach a large worldwide audience: Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, French, English, German, and Italian. Soon Russian, and additional languages, will follow.
Lexifone was launched several weeks ago: a “soft launch”, designed to test the system at work. The results were too good: to celebrate the occasion, the company gave out a 10 dollar free coupon, and was swamped by a rush of hundreds of thousands Chinese users which overwhelmed its servers. Currently, the next main target is Mexico, a country whose business people conduct considerably trade with the USA, and is showing a strong demand for translation services.
People at Lexifone are aware of their potential roll in breaking the language barriers worldwide, by connecting between people from every corner of the globe whom, in the past, had no chance to communicate. “We are bursting the language frontiers” – remarks Ike Sagie. “It could certainly change the world” •

in Israel’s Lexifone

The Canadian media company Entertainment Media has invested 2 million dollars in Lexifone, an Israeli startup company at the High-Center Incubator in Haifa. Within the frame of the investment agreement, the Canadian company will receive 25% of Lexifone, and an option for future purchase.
Entertainment Media has engaged celebrities Gene Simmons -- “KISS” vocalist and former Israeli citizen -- and Phoenix NBA basketball star Steve Nash, to be the Company’s worldwide spokesmen and presenters.
Lexifone was founded in the year 2010, and is run by Dr. Ike Sagie, co-founder of Attunity Inc. Lexifone has developed a multilingual phonetic dictionary designed for use in mobile phones. The system allows for simultaneous phonetic translation between two parties who speak a different language, in either a telephone or face to face conversation.
To this day, the company had raised five hundred thousand dollars, and employed five employees. The current capital raising is intended for recruiting new employees, and for Marketing & Sales activities.
Entertainment Media, listed in the Toronto Stock Exchange at a market value of 142 million dollars, plans to integrate Lexiphone’s product into the activities of Ortsbo, a subsidiary engaged in translating languages for social media users. Ortsbo has some 40 million users worldwide.

Mucho tiempo ha pasado desde que el mundo se convirtió en una pequeña aldea global en la cual la información fluye de un lado al otro con la velocidad de un rayo y prácticamente sin interferencias. Los surfistas de un país hablan con surfistas de otros países, y toda compañía respetable hace negocios no splo en su país sino también en el extranjero. El único obstáculo que aún es tal es, obviamente, la barrera idiomática. Mientras no comprendamos el idioma del otro, el mundo permanecerá distante y aislado.
El ritmo acelerado de la globalización ha dado lugar a una gran demanda de servicios de traducción. De acuerdo a un estudio realizado por “Common Sense”, dicha demanda continuará aumentando a un ritmo anual del 12%, y por otro lado se estima que el volumen del mercado global de servicios y tecnologías de traducción llega a alrededor de 33 mil millones de dólares. En realidad, los servicios de traducción destinados al mercado de consumo existen desde los albores de la Internet, con innumerables jugadores en el ramo, como ser Google, Microsoft y – en hebreo – Rav Milim, Morfix, Babylon, etc.
Actualmente los esfuerzos en éste área están siguiendo dos cursos: no es el mejoramiento de los motores de traducción, a fines de hacerlos más precisos; el otro es desarrollar nuevas tecnologías que permitan traducirlo todo, en cualquier lugar y en cualquier situación.
Mejorar la calidad de la traducción es una cuestión delicada: no obstante la alta calidad de traducción de palabras que ha sido lograda, la traducción de frases y de documentos enteros es aún inadecuada – especialmente en hebreo. Pero el tiempo surte sus efectos, y la traducción está mejorando. “Las empresas continúan trabajando en la traducción de palabras y de frases de un idioma al otro, a fines de alcanzar la más alta calidad”, explica Liath Sadeh-Schternberg, Vicepresidente de Marketing & Ventas de Babylon, la compañía israelí de traducciones. Hasta que eso suceda, las compañías continuarán ofreciendo servicios de traducción de “carne y hueso”1. Babylon, por ejemplo, ofrece ése servicio y también www.onehourtranslation.com.
El segundo curso es el que se relaciona a los medios utilizados para traducir, lo cual está avanzando a un ritmo acelerado. Verdad, aún estamos lejos del famoso “Pez de Babilonia” (Babylon Fish) – de la novela “Guía para el Autostopista Galáctico” (Guide for The Galactic Hitchhiker) – ése pez que uno se coloca en el oído a fines de entender todo lo que se dice en otros idiomas. Pero estamos llegando a eso a paso seguro. En el pasado los diccionarios en línea eran accesibles exclusivamente mediante un PC y ofrecían principalmente funciones básicas: ingresar palabras y frases, y recibir la traducción. El teléfono inteligente (smartphone) fue un salto hacia adelante: no sólo es ahora posible llevar con nosotros los diccionarios online adonde deseemos, sino que conseguimos nuevas capacidades.
Una de esas capacidades es tomar una foto de textos reales, tal como los vemos – en carteles, afiches o páginas – y traducirlos sin necesidad de teclearlos en el teléfono. Google, un huésped habitual en toda reseña tecnológica, realizó unas semanas atrás una actualización de la aplicación “Google Translate”, que ahora permite fotografiar un texto real –menús de restaurantes, por ejemplo – seleccionar a continuación con el dedo el segmento requerido, e inmediatamente recibir la traducción. Esta es -- al margen -- la mejora de una opción similar disponible hace ya más de dos años: “Goggles”, una aplicación de Google.

Actualmente, la aplicación de Google es una de las pocas que apoyan el hebreo en la traducción de una fotografía. Otra aplicación semejante es “Babylon Touch”, que opera de un modo similar sólo que con palabras aisladas. Por ejemplo, si estás leyendo un artículo y tropiezas con una palabra que no entiendes, puedes fotografiar el texto, seleccionar la palabra específica y traducirla.
La aplicación “Word Lens” lleva esta posibilidad un paso más adelante, por medio del uso de Augmented Reality (Realidad Aumentada): apuntas el smartphone hacia un cartel – por ejemplo -- en una lengua extranjera, y la traducción aparece en la pantalla como si estuviese sobre el cartel mismo.
Siri, el traductor
Paralelamente al desarrollo de la tecnología de traducción visual, vemos un gran avance de la tecnología de traducción fonética. Éste sistema identifica el habla, lo convierte en texto y, a continuación, lo lee en voz alta. En los últimos dos años ha tenido lugar un crecimiento importante en la cantidad de programas que ofrecen tales servicios. Aplicaciones populares, tal como “SpeechTrans” y “jibbigo”, son capaces – entre otras
cosas -- de identificar el habla y devolver una traducción vocalizada. Ninguna de estas dos aplicaciones apoya el hebreo pero, afortunadamente por cierto, tenemos “Google Translate”, que incluye una configuración “chat de voz” que nos permite grabar una oración y reproducirla en otro idioma. Esta aplicación apoya el hebreo bastante bien: facilita la traducción vocal del hebreo al italiano, español, inglés y otros idiomas, y viceversa. Sin duda: una aplicación obligatoria para al próximo viaje.
De hecho, esta aplicación permite traducir una conversación en persona. Por ejemplo: entras a un negocio en Holanda2 para comprar una botella de agua sin gas, pero el vendedor no habla ni una palabra en español. Le dices al smartphone en voz alta lo que quieres y, a continuación, el dispositivo pronuncia la frase en holandés.
La aspiración es incorporar esta función a la aplicación “Personal Assitant” (Asistente Personal), al igual que Siri en iPhone. “Estamos entrando en un área en el cual tomamos un producto como Siri y lo conectamos a la traducción, lo cual permite realizar tareas en otros idiomas también. “Y así es que Siri sabe no sólo encontrar lugares de interés, sino que sabe también traducir”, revela Sadeh-Schternberg de Babylon.
Pero resulta que la traducción simultánea de conversaciones telefónicas es lo más importante. Este es una necesidad esencial para gente de negocios que, por ejemplo, deben conducir una conversación telefónica con colegas en otro país, pero que no hablan su lengua. En el pasado era habitual incluir en la conversación a un intérprete simultáneo, pero esta es una solución costosa y – además – la gente de negocios no muestra mucho entusiasmo por hablar de cuestiones delicadas en presencia de terceros.

Eficiencia en puestos de control fronterizos
El procedimiento es simple: se marca un número especial, se ingresa el número de destino, y se realiza la conexión. Se oye un tono breve, y se dice una frase. Pasados unos segundos – durante los cuales el sistema procesa la información – la persona del otro lado oye la traducción. A continuación esa persona presiona la tecla #, y habla en su idioma. Su contraparte, en su turno, oye la traducción. . El precio del servicio incluye el costo de la llamada al exterior. Lexifone se embolsa la diferencia. “Somos una compañía telefónica que está atenta a su lenguaje”, declara Ike Sagie. Y agrega Itay con una sonrisa: “Un persona de negocios necesitará a partir de hoy tres cosas: un PC, un teléfono y Lexifone.
Lexifone no requiere conexión con la Internet ni instalación de programa alguno. Funciona con todos los servicios, VOIP, teléfono celular o de línea. El procesamiento de idioma, el reconocimiento fonético y la traducción se efectúan en los servidores de la compañía, y no en los teléfonos mismos. Con Lexifone es también posible mantener conversaciones en persona.
Las ventajas de Lexifone pueden también ser implementadas en puntos de servicios internacionales. Gobiernos, agencias de bienestar social y cruces de fronteras – establecimientos que dan servicio a inmigrantes y poblaciones extranjeras, como ser mejicanos en Los Ángeles o turcos en Berlín –invierten actualmente montos considerables en servicios humanos de traducción. Lexifone les ofrece los mismos resultados, con significantes ahorros. Asimismo, Lexifone es conveniente para clientes privados: hoteles pueden ofrecer éste servicio a los huéspedes, facilitándoles así entablar llamadas desde el teléfono de las habitaciones en su propia lengua.
Éste servicio de Lexifone tiene, naturalmente, ciertos límites y deficiencias. Por ejemplo: durante la conversación, el modo de hablar tiene que ser lento y gradual – frase por frase – además del tiempo de espera requerido para cada traducción. Una conversación fluida es impensable, y los participantes no pueden interrumpirse los unos a los otros. Más aún, el ambiente en el cual se mantiene la conversación debe mantenerse libre de ruidos de fondo. Sagie señala que “también con un intérprete humano, la conversación tiene que conducirse de modo conciso”
Aún no en hebreo
En la presente etapa, el sistema aún no apoya el hebreo. El análisis de Lexifone es llevado a cabo en base a estadísticas fonéticas y semánticas existentes --para ciertos idiomas -- en bases de datos. La gente de Lexifone aclara que, al momento, no existen las suficientes estadísticas del hebreo que posibilitan la traducción. Y si esperaban hablar inglés con un colega chino, eso aparentemente tampoco es posible aún, ya que el sistema aún no es capaz de traducir acentos extranjeros que le son desconocidos.
De todos modos, Lexifone apoya suficientes idiomas que le permiten llegar a audiencias en todo el mundo: chinos, portugueses, españoles, latinoamericanos, franceses, ingleses, alemanes e italianos. Pronto se agregarán el ruso, y otros idiomas.
Lexifone fue lanzada algunas semanas atrás mediante un “lanzamiento suave”, diseñado para probar el sistema en acción. Los resultados fueron demasiado buenos: para celebrar la ocasión, la compañía regaló cupones gratuitos de 10 dólares, y fue inundada con una precipitación de cientos de miles de usuarios chinos que causó el desborde de sus servidores. Actualmente, la principal meta para el futuro es Méjico, un país que mantiene un comercio substancial con los EE.UU. y que muestra una gran demanda de servicios de traducción.
La gente de Lexifone es consciente de su rol potencial en cuanto a romper las barreras idiomáticas en todo el mundo, facilitando la conexión de personas de cada rincón del globo que, en el pasado, no tenían posibilidad alguna de comunicarse. “Estamos rompiendo las fronteras idiomáticas”, remarca Sagie. “Esto podría, ciertamente, cambiar al mundo”. •

La empresa canadiense de medios Entertainment Media Co. ha invertido 2 millones de dólares en Lexifone, un grupo startup israelí perteneciente a la High-Center una incubadora en Haifa. En el marco del acuerdo de inversión, la compañía canadiense será adjudicada el 25% de Lexifone y la opción de adquirirla en el futuro.
Entertainment Media ha contratado a las celebridades Gene Simmons y Steve Nash – ex¬¬-israelí y solista del grupo de rock KISS; y jugador del Phoenix en la NBA, respectivamente – en calidad de voceros y anunciadores.
Lexifone fue fundada en el año 2010, y está dirigida por el Dr. Ike Sagie, cofundador de Attunity Inc. Lexifone ha desarrollado un diccionario fonético multilingüe diseñado para uso en teléfonos móviles. El sistema facilita asimismo la traducción fonética simultánea de una conversación entre dos personas que no hablan el mismo idioma, sea esta una conversación telefónica o en persona.
Hasta ahora la compañía había reclutado quinientos mil dólares, y constaba de cinco empleados. La actual inversión de capital está destinada a contratar nuevos empleados y a actividades de Marketing & Ventas.

Gil Cohen, Gerente general de ¨Jajah¨ (Telefónica Digital) ha sido nominado, a principios del pasado mes de Julio, director de Lexifone.
Cohen, poseedor de un título en ingeniería otorgado Por el Instituto Israelí de Tecnología (Technion), trae consigo 18 años de experiencia como gerente de compañías líderes de alta tecnología, como ser VocalTech, Mercury y HP.
En su puesto actual, Cohen es gerente de “Jajah”, que fue adquirida por Telefónica en al año 2009. Bajo la nueva estructura, Cohen lidera las actividades de Telefónica en Israel.

Source text - English David and Jacko normally get on just fine with the hard working ants of the world. But when David wakes one morning to discover his nightmare is turning into a horrible reality he and Jacko have no choice but to seek help from the animal the ants fear the most before millions of tiny teeth strip them to the bone.
DAVID AND JACKO: THE ANT GOD
THE FLYING ANTS
They were all over me. Just irritating at first, all up and down my arms, and then my legs and my body. Biting me. I tried to brush them off, but my arms were trapped, and there were so many of them.
They were ants. On my face. Crawling in my ears. They started biting me all over as I clawed at them. Each bite stung like acid.
I woke up in sweaty terror. I was in my bed, and it was dark. I sat upright, but in my half-asleep state I wasn’t sure what had happened. Common sense told me I had just had a horrible dream of getting eaten alive by ants.
I leaned over to the side of the bed and flicked on a lamp to try and settle myself.
My bed was full of ants! Writhing black masses of them, right where I was sleeping. It hadn’t been a dream after all. I was being eaten alive!
I jumped out of bed as quickly as I could and ran down the hallway, petrified, feeling like an animal must feel when it is in danger of being eaten by another animal.
I took a moment down the hallway to compose myself. Jacko, my little dog, had followed me from just outside my bedroom. He looked bemused, and I scratched him on the head to distract myself.
“Come on mate,” I said. “That was pretty awful. What the hell were those ants doing in my bed?”
Jacko just looked at me. He didn’t seem too convinced.
I wandered back down the hallway, slowly, with Jacko close behind. I paused at my door to turn on my main light.
The bed was empty. There was not an ant to be seen.
I stood there, confused. It had seemed so real. Some of the bites were still stinging me, or so it seemed. Perhaps I was losing my mind.
I had better not tell my parents, I thought, as I turned the room light off and moved back towards my bed. Thankfully my bed lamp was still on. I planned to keep it on, as I was still a bit shaken.
As I got closer to the bed and was about to hop in, I noticed two or three little black shapes on the mattress when I moved the sheet.
What the. . .?
Perhaps they had caused me to have that horrible dream, I thought. I peered at them closer. They looked like ants, but they had wings.
Ants don’t have wings, I thought to myself. Or do they?
Just as I was pondering this, the ants took off into the air and flew outside my window.
Jacko and I just looked at each other in shock for a moment before I closed my window up tight and tried to sleep for the rest of the night with the light on.
TROUBLE IN ANTLAND
When I finally got up, I was both grumpy and disturbed. That didn’t bother Dad, though, who was doing something out in the backyard that involved a lot of noise.
Bang, bang, bang!
He was hammering something, which was just what I needed after my poor night’s sleep. Granddad had given me a tiny hammer as a toy when I was little, but the first thing I hammered was our new TV. Mum still liked to point out the chips in the glass when guests came over.
It was when Dad found me hammering nails into the power point that he took the hammer away from me, and I have stayed away from carpentry ever since.
“Bloody ants!”
Dad was talking to himself, but this got my interest. What trouble was he having with ants after my little adventure during the night, I wondered.
I went out to the backyard through the hole in the wall where the fireplace used to be, and Dad looked up from his workbench.
“Look at these bloody things,” he said, pointing to a line of black ants coming out of various places in the garden and passing right by him.
“They started crawling over my foot,” he said. “Little beggers.”
It was quite the sight. It would seem that all the ants of our garden were coming out of their hiding places—the drains, the gardens, under the barbeque—and heading off together for some sort of adventure.
“Ants move sometimes when it rains,” said Dad. “But I’ve never seen anything quite like this.”
Neither had I. It was weird all right, but I didn’t have any more time to think about it as I was late for school. I grabbed my bike from around the side of the house and headed off on my normal route. Jacko followed, which he did sometimes, even though he strictly wasn’t meant to and he sometimes got locked up in a cage by the school janitor.
After a while it became clear that the ant issues weren’t confined to our backyard or my bed. There were little black streams coming out of every house, where they joined up to the main stream, which was getting quite crowded. It was like a road network of ants, all joining up to the highway during peak hour.
And by the looks of things, that highway was heading towards the trees around the school.
I wondered if a big storm was coming.
Class was normal enough. We had Mrs Bryce again as our teacher, and she laughed and asked us to write stories that were dark and funny at the same time. I wrote about a faraway land with creatures that lived by sucking out the eyes of flies.
I think she liked it.
It had gotten weird by the time I went to lunch though. The streams of ants seemed to have made it right into the school grounds. They were everywhere. A few of the kids were stomping on them and laughing, which I did think was pretty funny, although not as funny as the one kid who accidently ate an ant sandwich, and the other kid who literally got ants in his pants.
We probably squashed about 10,000 of them as we went down to the oval to play some soccer.
There weren’t too many ants down there, though, so we had no problem starting our game. One of the teachers, Mr Motcher, took it upon himself to referee and was doing a pretty good job until he blew the whistle while I was running up field in a magnificent solo effort and was about to score.
“What is it, Mr Motcher?” I said, really disappointed.
Mr Motcher grabbed the ball from the ground and lifted it to his chest.
An ant ran out of one nostril and up the other.
It was quite repulsive.
“You, young man, touched the ball with your hands.”
I protested my innocence as another ant pushed its way out of the edge of Mr Motcher’s left eye. He didn’t seem to notice—either the ants or my pleas for the ball.
By now I had had enough. I swung my foot hard up towards the ball, determined to continue my way up the field and score the goal that I had been wrongfully denied.
Really hard.
Unfortunately, rather than striking the ball out of Mr Motcher’s hands, my foot came up short and I . . . hit Mr Motcher instead. Really, really hard. In a place where he didn’t want to be hit. No, not at all.
It was an accident. But Mr Motcher didn’t seem to see this. Instead, he yelped and immediately collapsed on the soccer field in a tight ball of pain.
“Downie,” he whispered, with ants spilling out of his mouth and onto his chin, “you’re going to pay for this. All of you kids. You’re going to pay for this, I promise.”
He licked the ants back into his mouth and looked pleased with himself.
By now Jacko had run out and joined us in the middle of the oval. He was yelping and quite agitated. “Yes, yes mate,” I said. “I know, it isn’t fair, but he’s the teacher. I shouldn’t have kicked him, especially there.”
Jack yelped some more, which caused me to look up from Mr Motcher, who was still lying on the ground.
There was a black wall about a foot high making its way over from the playground onto the oval. Towards me. It was black, like the ant stream on the ground, except it was surging, like a wave at sea, and coming forward across the grass quite quickly.

התעוררתי מיוזע ואחוז אימה. הייתי במיטתי, ומסביבי חושך. התיישבתי במיטה, אולם בהיותי חצי רדום לא הייתי בטוח במה שקרה. השכל הישר אמר לי שהיה זה רק חלום בלהות שבו אני נטרף חי על ידי נמלים.

בסוף המסדרון עצרתי לרגע, בשביל לאסוף את עצמי. ג'אקו, כלבי הקטן ששכב מחוץ לחדר השינה שלי, הלך אחרי. הוא ניראה משועשע, ואני גירדתי לו בראש רק על מנת להסיח את דעתי.
"בוא חבר", אמרתי. "זה היה נורא. מה עשו כל הנמלים האלה במיטה שלי, לעזאזל?"
ג'אקו רק הסתכל עלי. הוא לא ניראה מאוד משוכנע.
חזרתי אחורה לאורך המסדרון, לאט, עם ג'אקו קרוב אחריי. עצרתי ליד הדלת על מנת להדליק את האור הגדול בחדרי.
המיטה הייתה ריקה. שום נמלה לא נראתה לעין.
עמדתי שם, מבולבל. זה היה נידמה כל כך אמיתי. כמה מהנשיכות עדיין צרבו, או כך לפחות היה נידמה לי. אולי אני יוצא מדעתי?
אולי מוטב שלא אספר להוריי, חשבתי בעודי מכבה את האור בחדר וחוזר לכיוון המיטה. למזלי מנורת הלילה עדיין דלקה. היות ועדיין הרגשתי רצת מזועזע, התכוונתי להשאיר אותה דולקת.
כשהתקרבתי למיטה ועמדתי לקפוץ לתוכה, בהזיזי את הסדין הבחנתי בשתיים או שלוש נקודות שחורות על המזרן.
מה לכל ה...?
חשבתי שאולי הן אלה שגרמו לי לחלום את החלום הנורא הזה. התבוננתי בהן מקרוב יותר. הן נראו כמו נמלים, אבל היו להן כנפיים.
לנמלים אין כנפיים, חשבתי לעצמי. או שכן שי להן?
בעודי מהרהר בשאלה זאת, הנמלים התרוממו באוויר והעפו החוצה דרך החלון שלי.
ג'אקו ואני הסתכלנו לרגע אחד על השני בהלם, לפני שסגרתי היטב את החלון, ואחר כך ניסיתי לישון את שארית הלילה עם המנורה דולקת.
בעיות בארץ הנמלים
כשסוף סוף קמתי, הייתי הן מצוברח והן מבולבל. זה אמנם לא הפריע לאבא, שהיה בחצר עסוק דבר מה שהיה כרוך בהרבה רעש.
טראח, טראח,טראח!!
הוא הלם על משהו, שזה בדיוק מה שחסר לי שחרי ליל השימורים שלי. כשהייתי קטן סבא נתן לי פטיש צעצוע קטן, אלא שהדבר הראשון שהלמתי בו הייתה הטלביזיה החדשה שלנו. כשבאו אורחים, אימא עדיין נהנתה להצביע בפניהם על זכוכית המסך הסדוקה.
אבא לקח ממני את הפטיש כשהוא מצא אותי דופק מסמרים לתוך שקע החשמל, ומאז ועד היום אני רחוק מכל דבר שקשור לנגרות.
"נמלים ארורות!"
אבא דיבר לעצמו, אבל הדבר משך את תשומת לבי. אחרי ההרפתקה הלילית הקטנה שלי, תהיתי אילו בעיות יש לאבא עם הנמלים.
יצאתי לחצר דרך החור בקיר איפה שהיה הקמין בעבר, ואבא הרים את עיניו משלחן העבודה שלו.
"תסתכל על הדברים הארורים האלה" אמר, תוך שהוא מצביע על שורה שחורה של נמלים שיוצאות מכמה מקומות בגינה ועוברות ממש לידו.
"הן התחילו לטפס על הרגל שלי" אמר. "קבצניות קטנות שכמותן".
זה היה מראה מדהים. ניראה היה כאילו כל הנמלים שבגינה שלנו יצאו ממקומות המסתור שלהן – תעלות הניקוז, ערוגות הגינה, מתחת למנגל - כשפניהן אל הרפתקה מסוג כלשהו.
"לפעמים, כשיורד גשם, הנמלים עוברות מקום" אמר אבא. "אבל אף פעם ךא ראיתי דבר כזה".
גם אני לא. זה היה באמת מוזר, אבל לא היה לי כבר זמן לחשוב על זה משום שכבר איחרתי לבית הספר. תפסתי את האופניים שלי מליד הבית ופניתי לדרכי הרגילה. ג'אקו עקב אחרי, כמו שהוא נהג לעשות לפעמים, למרות שאסור היה לו בכלל, ולמרות שכמה פעמים אב בית הספר נעל אותו בכלוב.
אחרי זמן מה התברר שעניין הנמלים לא הצטמצם רק לחצר שלנו או המיטה שלי. מכל בית יצאו נחילים שחורים קטנים שהצטרפו לזרם העיקרי, שהלך ונהיה צפוף מרגע לרגע. זה היה כמו רשת של כבישים לנמלים, המתנקזים כולם לכביש המהיר בשעות העומס.
וכפי שזה ניראה, האוטוסטראדה הזאת הובילה אל העצים שמסביב לבית הספר.
תהיתי האם סופה גדולה מתקרבת.
השיעור היה די רגיל. שוב הייתה לנו את גב' ברייס בתור מורה, והיא צחקה וביקשה מאיתנו לכתוב סיפורים שיהיו קודרים ומצחיקים כאחת. אני כתבתי על ארץ רחוקה עם יצורים שהתקיימו ממציצת עיניהן של זבובים.

כשהלכתי לארוחת צהריים, זה כבר היה באמת מוזר. ניראה שנחילי הנמלים הצליחו להגיע ממש אל תוך שטח בית הספר. הן היו בכל מקום. כמה מהילדים היו דורכים עליהן וצוחקים, דבר שניראה לי מצחיק, אבל לא מצחיק כמו הילד שבטעות אכל סנדוויץ' נמלים, וילד אחר שהנמלים נכנסו לו ממש למכנסיים.
בטח מחצנו לפחות 10,000 נמלים בדרכנו לשחק קצת כדורגל במגרש.
אמנם במגרש לא היו כל כך הרבה נמלים, ולכן לא הייתה לנו בעיה להתחיל במשחק. אחד המורים, מר מוצ'ר, לקח על עצמו את תפקיד השופט ועשה עבודה די טובה, עד שהוא נשף במשרוקיתו בעודי רץ במעלה המגרש במאמץ יחיד מפואר, וכמעט הבקעתי שער.
"מה קרה, מר מוצ'ר?" שאלתי, מאוכזב למדי.
מר מוצ'ר הרים את הכדור מהקרקע לגובה החזה שלו.
נמלה יצאה מנחיר אחד ורצה לנחיר השני.
זה היה די דוחה.
"אתה, אישי הצעיר, נגעת בכדור בדיך"
הצהרתי על חפותי בדיוק כשעוד נמלה יצאה מזווית עינו השמאלית של מר מוצ'ר. ניראה שהוא לא שם לב, לא לנמלים ולא לתחנונים שלי על הכדור.
זה כבר היה יותר מדי. הנפתי את רגלי בכוח לעבר הכדור, נחוש להמשיך בדרכי במעלה המגרש ולהבקיע את השער שנשלל ממני שלא בצדק.
באמת בכוח.
למרבה הצער, במקום לחלץ את הכדור מידי, רגלי קצרה מלהגיע לכדור ו... פגעתי במר מוצ'ר. ממש ממש בכוח. פגעתי בו במקום שהוא לא היה רוצה שיפגעו בו. לא, ממש לא.
