I was contacted by Mark Anderson via e-mail and asked to do an English -Spanish translation on Racism.
He explained that I would have to translate two different texts. After I started working, he offered to pay in advance for both texts, but he refused to pay in any way but a cashier's check. When I was about to send him the first text, he told me that the second text was now going to be translated into Azerbaijani, not Spanish.

I received the check, but I was never able to cash it or deposit it (this was due to Mexican bank regulation), but now I discover it was all a scam!!!
Be careful with this guy...I have read several stories exactly as mine.

Such a pity that you hadn't signed up for the notifications from the Scam Alert Centre: http://www.proz.com/about/translator-scam-alerts. You were actually lucky if "all" you got was a rejection from the Mexican authorities. We have heard of some translators actually being prosecuted for trying to cash those false cheques. And some have also sent cheques/transfers of their own to compensate for an apparent overpayment. So, maybe it helps you to know it could have been worse .
